Most of the population of Valparaiso live on the hills surrounding the city but the commercial district and port is on a flat area below known as the 'plan'. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries a large number of funiculars or ascensors were constructed to connect the residential districts with the city centre. Sixteen of these survive today, although only seven are presently operational. The others are reported to be being modernised. This is the Ascensor Artilleria, which last worked around 2014 so the upgrade is taking a while.
