Gorebridge: Opened in 1847, closed in 1969, Gorebridge is one of the former Waverley route stations scheduled to reopen under current plans. The old station house, seen here on 8 March, has seen action on several fronts over the 40+ years since closure of the line, but is currently looking as good as ever [see image 21520]. The trackbed continues south under the roadbridge carrying the B6372 in the left background.

Bamber Bridge: The early afternoon Blackpool South to Colne service passes the CE sidings at Bamber Bridge on 14 March 2010 in the hands of 142051. The former direct line to Preston via Todd Lane ran off to the right behind the unit.

Ribble Steam Railway Museum: A pioneer back in its birthplace. As Netherlands State Railways No.601 this shunter was the first of the Dutch 08 locos to be built by English Electric at the former Dick Kerr works in Preston in 1955. It was later converted to remote control radio operation (and renumbered 671) but at the end of its working life in Holland was repatriated to the UK in 2005. It is currently a non-operational exhibit at the Ribble Steam Railway and seen here in a line of locomotives that also includes the L&YR A Class 0-6-0 No.1300 (BR 52322).

Fouldubs Junction: Headed by a WH Malcolm-liveried Class 66, a rake of high-cube Talgo wagons (with hydraulic loading deck permitting payloads of up to 60 tonnes) is loaded with palletised glass at Malcolm’s Grangemouth depot in early 2001. A Freightliner Class 47 can just be glimpsed in the background, shunting the adjacent TDG container terminal.

Cardiff Central: Peak (class 45) no 89 Honourable Artillery Company at Cardiff General (renamed Cardiff Central in May 1973) shortly after arrival seven minutes late on train 1V61, the 07.08 Derby - Cardiff (on which I had travelled from Birmingham) on Saturday 14th March 1970.

Cockenzie: 56 072 and a sibling faff about with coal wagons (if something so big can be said to faff, and if you can faff so slowly) on the Cockenzie branch in July 1995.  The branch stops short of Cockenzie Power Station itself with the coal being carried into the site by a half-mile long conveyor.  I'd imagine this was thought preferable to either an inconvenient level crossing over the coast road or roundabout rail route with expensive engineering works to avoid one.

Wolverhampton Low Level: Ex-GWR Castle class locomotive no 5047 Earl of Dartmouth brings a train through the rain-soaked platforms of Wolverhampton Low Level station around 1959. The 4-6-0 was withdrawn from Wolverhampton's Stafford Road shed in September 1962. Wolverhampton Low Level itself closed to passengers in 1972 but saw subsequent use as a parcels depot and latterly as the BR Divisional Engineer's offices. The listed main station building still stands and now forms part of a mixed retail and residential development occupying the former station site.
