Quinloch Level Crossing
Gates of this style were installed along the West Highland Way when it was first developed. They were of rather an elegant design where the bars (angled to a pivot at the bottom) would just be pushed apart to pass through, and gravity would bring them together on release. At the top was a hoop which needed flipped to separate them and inevitably was left in the flipped position. More conventional gates have been installed. Walkers often walked along the top of the Loch Lomond Water Supply Scheme pipe between Dumgoyach and Killearn, avoiding mud at the lower level, but the improved path now runs at the lower level leaving this gate, at the site of the Quinloch Level Crossing, out of use, unloved and overgrown.
