Following an investigation by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), Scotlands Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has prosecuted Network Rail for allowing trains to travel at more than 100mph over a badly storm damaged viaduct.

An investigation into why trains were allowed over a badly damaged bridge has found that a safety system for at-risk structures was no longer in use.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch looked at why the Lamington Viaduct in South Lanarkshire was used when it was close to collapse after storms in 2015. It found a safety system for over 100 bridges in Scotland had lapsed after organisational changes at Network Rail. The rail body has been told to improve its safety and management procedures. A major railway line between Scotland and England will reopen next week, following a seven week closure.
Network Rail closed part of the West Coast Mainline after storm damage severely weakened a viaduct in South Lanarkshire. Part of the Lamington viaduct over the River Clyde was 'on the brink of failure', according to the ScotRail Alliance. They said train services will resume running over the bridge on 22 February. The West Coast Main Line is to remain closed until the beginning of March amid further delays to repair a crucial viaduct in South Lanarkshire.
The route was closed north of Carlisle earlier this month after Storm Frank at the end of December caused damage to the Lamington Viaduct. Engineers initially thought the repairs would be completed by 1 February. They have now said the extent of the damage means the crossing will not re-open until the first week in March. Engineers working to repair the West Coast Main Line have said damage to a crucial viaduct is more severe than they first thought.
The line had to be closed after water pressure undermined a pier of the Lamington Viaduct in South Lanarkshire. An initial assessment led engineers to predict that the line could be back to normal operation by 1 February. They have now said that a new timetable for repairs will not be issued until next week. Virgin Trains has said an hourly rail service between Glasgow and Carlisle will operate from Saturday.
The west coast main line has been closed since Storm Frank damaged the Lamington Viaduct in South Lanarkshire. Virgin said trains will run on a shuttle service via Dumfries, with passengers changing at Carlisle to complete their journey.
