Mossley

This plaque on the Manchester platform at Mossley honours Private E. Sykes VC, a soldier of WWI who worked at this station and nearby Micklehurst. In 1920 the LNWR named Claughton no. 2035 'Private E. Sykes, V.C.' , which was rebuilt in 1933 as a Patriot 4-6-0 no. 5537 (Later BR 45537), retaining the name until withdrawn and scrapped in 1962. The brass nameplate is on display at the Northumberland Fusiliers' Museum at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland.
