![Locomotives on shed at Eastleigh in October 1962, featuring 2-4-0WT no 30587, one of the famous Southern Railway well tanks designed by Joseph Beattie. Built in 1874 by Beyer Peacock, at their Gorton Works in Manchester (at a cost of £2,570) no 30587 was withdrawn by BR in December 1962. The locomotive now forms part of the national collection [see image 22748] and can be seen operating on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway wher e it is on extended loan from the NRM.<br>

![Adams B4 0-4-0T no 30102 photographed on shed at 71A Eastleigh in September 1963, the year it was officially withdrawn by BR. The B4, which had spent almost its entire working life in Southampton Docks, became one of a number of withdrawn locomotives acquired by Butlins for use as static displays at various holiday camps. Squatting over the western tracks is the 1912 Clapham Junction 'A' box, which consisted of a series of wooden sheds perched on a bowstring girder bridge. The frame once supported a 40 ton steel canopy, erected as air raid protection during WWII. This led to a partial collapse in May 1965, resulting in suspension of services while the canopy was removed. ![BR Class 73 dual powered Electro-Diesel 73129 [formerly E6036] <I>City of Winchester</I> at Waterloo on 10 June 1983. (Ex-SR 4-SUB unit 100663 is standing in the background in the part of the station that was subsequently rebuilt as Waterloo International for the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994.) The low-powered diesel engine fitted to the class 73 locomotives as an alternative to their main 3rd rail DC power system eventually resulted in them becoming much sought after by preservation groups. ![If you look at a railway map, Redbridge (West of Southampton) may look like a good place to watch both freight and passenger operations. In practice, a rake of empty container flats was the only sign of freight and most passenger trains passed through without stopping. There was also little shade from the sun.
