![Plenty of admirers, young and old, for the Jones Goods as it inches along the east to south curve at Forres station (for rounding purposes) and over Tytler Street level crossing in September 1965. The locomotive had just brought in one of the Highland Railway centenary special trains from Inverness. A month later this curve closed to all passenger traffic - to coincide with the Forres-Grantown-Aviemore service withdrawal. ![In early 1967 a northbound Edinburgh-Inverness service overtakes an engineers train at Dalanraoch loop, mid-way along the recently-singled section between Blair Atholl and Dalnaspidal. ![Headed by two Derby Sulzer Type 2s with a BRCW Type 2 in between, <I>The Royal Highlander</I> to Euston prepares for the off at Aviemore in the Autumn of 1967. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was not unusual for this 1900 departure from Inverness to be triple-headed, with 16 vehicles in the consist. A restaurant car (detached at Perth after dinner service) was marshalled directly behind the locomotives, while the rest of the train was a mix of sleepers, seating coaches, parcels vans and Motorail vehicles at the tail. The ultimate multi-purpose train!<br>

![A view of the former triangular platform layout at Forres, taken from the rear of an Inverness-Aberdeen DMU on 2nd May 1968. The redundant platform to the left formerly served passenger workings from the Elgin direction to Aviemore via Dava and Grantown, the line beside it probably last being used for freight traffic prior to 1965 closure. The layout at Forres - with just a single platform - has remained virtually unchanged since then, despite regularly-voiced proposals to shift the crossing loop (the start of which can be seen in the centre-right of the photo) back into the station.<br>

![This is the rail bridge over the road at the north end of Boat of Garten during the demolition in June 1974. The embankment either side of the bridge has already been cut back prior to the removal of the arch. The road was being widened in conjunction with the new road bridge over the River Spey which was behind the camera. For several years there was a gap on the rail route from Boat of Garten to Broomhill. When local stations between Perth and Inverness were closed in 1965, it was a condition of closure that the Dalnaspidal platforms were retained in case of emergency needs when the A9 was blocked by snow. It is not known if the station was ever subsequently used in emergency, or whether the condition is still in force - but the platforms are still there! The Distillery had a private railway connected to BR. ![Struan Viaduct is just east of the former Struan station. Viaducts would be more accurate - the single track Highland main line was doubled from Blair Atholl to Dalnacardoch in 1900, requiring a second bridge. Singling came in 1966, but fortunately both the bridges were retained and it was re-doubled in 1978. The bridges cross both the River Garry and the B847. The stations at Grantown, Dava and Dunphail had extremely long platforms and long loops, which give away that these were former mainline stations. The engine is spotless and the paintwork gleaming, a credit to all the volunteers who work the Strathspey Railway.
