1570 |
Closed station on the Kilmarnock-Dumfries-Carlisle line. The former station still stands here by the signalbox and a new passing loop. The station could be re-opened but would clearly slow services on what is essentially a long distance moderately high speed line with an extra halt. |
| Glenboig | 1560 | Closed station on the Glasgow-Cumbernauld line. |
| Luncarty | 1520 | Closed station on the Perth-Inverness line. |

| Town | Population | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TOTAL | 712700 | This equates to 14% of the whole population of Scotland. |
| Dalkeith | 38590 |
Once served by a through station (Eskbank and Dalkeith) and terminus (Dalkeith) on the former Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway which may be re-opened on the proposed Edinburgh-Tweedbank Waverley Route. The route to Dalkeith is intack except where crossed on the level by the Edinburgh Bypass just to the south of Millerhill. It is a disgrace that Dalkeith, a large town, is not connected to the railway network when the Millerhill Marshalling Yard is not far away to the north. Even should the proposed Waverley Route not be re-opened, the line as far as Dalkeith should. A station here with a large park and ride carpark would serve a very large population. |
| Buckhaven | 30950 | Was a terminus on the Wemyss and Buckhaven Railway which was later extended east to Methil. Could be served by a parkway station at Cameron Bridge on the presently mathballed freight only Thornton-Methil. |
| Kirkintilloch | 29340 | Served to a limited extent by Bishopbriggs to the south. Could be served by re-opening the Lennoxtown Branch. |
| Bonnybridge | 19640 | Served by a through station on the Kilsyth and Bonnybridge Railway, the terminus of the Bonnybridge (Canal) Branch and could be served by re-opening a station at Greenhill Upper on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway or a station at Greenhill Lower on the Scottish Central Railway. |
| Peterhead | 17590 | Terminus of the Maud-Peterhead line. Re-opening the Formartine and Buchan Railway from Dyce to Peterhead would be required to re-open this station. As the route is circuitrous and shorter by road this is unlikely purely for passengers. |
| St Andrews | 14420 | Once a terminus of a the short St Andrews Railway from Leuchars later extended south round the East Neuk of Fife and served by a through station on the Anstruther and St Andrews Railway. Often mentioned as a possible re-opening to passengers the chief problem is that such a line would be a new short branch rather than a station on a through route from Dundee-Edinburgh. Service could run from this terminus to Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. |
| Penicuik | 14410 | Penicuik was once served by three railways; the south by the Pencuik Railway, the north by the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin Railway and the south was also poorly served by a distant station on the Peebles Railway. The north could be served by re-opening the line from Loanhead to Glencorse although the trackbed is partly landscaped and a large viaduct is missing at Milton Bridge. The south could be served by re-opening the line from Millerhill south to Dalkeith and then west and south to Rosewell and Penicuik. The route is intact except where it is crossed on the level by the Edinburgh Bypass just to the south of Millerhill and missing bridge over a new road just south west of Dalkeith. |
| Galashiels | 14300 | Galashiels was served by the Edinburgh
and Hawick Railway which later became the Waverley Route on extension
south to Carlisle. The route to Galashiels is intact except where is is
crossed on the level by the Edinburgh Bypass just to the south of Millerhill,
some landscaping south of Eskbank, Newtongrange, a missing overbridge at
Lady Victoria, landscaping at Arniston, a missing bridge over a road at
Arniston, housing built on the line at Gorebridge, landslips and drainage
problems at Tynehead, missing roadbridge at Falahill, building on the line
at Stow, and two missing viaducts north of Galashiels. Galashiels will be served by the proposed Waverley Route if re-opened. |
| Hawick | 14300 | Galashiels was served by the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway which later became the Waverley Route on extension south to Carlisle. Hawick is unlikely to be served by railways as the population between St Boswells and Hawick is low and between Carlisle and Hawick much lower. |
| Broxburn | 13480 | A number of freight only lines served oilworks in Broxburn. Broxburn could be served by a "Parkway" station to the north on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway - although this would reduce capacity of an already busy line. A station to the south could be opened on the Edinburgh and Bathgate Railway but this would be some distance south and separated from the town by the M8 - the existing station at Uphall probably provides an equally good service. |
| Forfar | 12990 | Forfar was initially a terminus on the Arbroath and Forfar Railway. A new through station was opened when the line was regauged and extended to Perth by the Scottish Midland Junction Railway and north to Aberdeen by the Aberdeen Railway. A line directly south to Broughty Ferry was also opened. The routes to Perth and Montrose remain fairly intact but as the population is not great along these routes it is unlikely that Forfar would be served by a railway. |
| Fraserburgh | 12180 | This was the northern terminus of the Formartine and Buchan Railway line from Dyce. Most of the route remains intact and unlike Peterhead the distance by rail compares favourable with that by road. The population between Fraserburgh and Dyce is quite low. |
| Whitburn | 10780 | Whitburn was served by a railway from Morningside, by Wishaw, to Bathgate. This closed to passengers at an early date. The line is unlikely to be re-opened at Whitburn would probably be best served by a "parkway" station at Armadale should the planned Airdrie-Bathgate line re-opening go ahead. |
| Kilsyth | 10090 | Kilsyth was served by initially a terminus and later a through station. This line unlikely to re-open and Kilsyth is served by a "parkway" station at Croy on the Edinburgh-Glasgow Railway. |
| Armadale | 9550 | Armadale was served by a station on the Airdrie-Bathgate railway which may re-open. The old station site is slightly out of town and there is not a good pedestrian route to it. |
| Ellon | 9080 | |
| Tranent | 8940 | |
| Haddington | 8750 | |
| Peebles | 8330 | |
| Galston | 8050 | |
| Buckie | 7960 | |
| Blairgowrie | 7880 | |
| Strathaven | 7650 | Strathaven was first a terminus on the Hamilton and Strathaven Railway and later served by a through station on the Mid Lanark Lines (connected to the Hamilton line and eastwards to Stonehouse, Larkhall and Hamilton) and Darvel and Strathaven Railway west to Darvel. To re-open a line to Strathaven the new Larkhall line could be extended south and west over the Broomhill Viaduct (still standing), Stonehouse Viaduct (missing and very expensive to replace) and a viaduct at Strathaven - although an edge of town station could be opened rather than reaching the site of the former central station. |

| Darvel | 3380 | |
| Eyemouth | 3320 | This was the terminus of the Eyemouth Railway. Could be served by parkway station at the closed station of Burnmouth on the East Coast Mainline. |
| Banknock | 3240 | |
| Kirkliston | 3130 | The original line from Ratho north to Queensferry served Kirkliston. This was superceded by the lines connecting to the south end of the Forth Bridge Railway and closed. A new proposal to build lines to serve Edinburgh Airport would also poorly serve Kirkliston. |
| Dollar | 2900 | |
| Callander | 2880 | |
| Fallin | 2740 | A freight only line ran from Polmaise Juncton, south of Stirling on the Scottish Central Railway to Polmaise Colliery at Fallin. The line was clsoed and lifted in the 1980s. The route is unlikely to be re-opened to simply serve Fallin and would be unlikely to be re-opened as a through route to any other location. |
| Innerleithen | 2720 | Innerleithen was served by a through station on the Peebles Railway which ran from Edinburgh to Peebles was extended to Innerleithen and then Galashiels. Re-opening this route would serve a greater population than the more direct Edinburgh-Gorebridge-Galashiels route but would offer a much longer and thus slower route. Between Penicuik and Peebles the population is fairly low except at Eddleston. |
| Coylton | 2630 | Coylton once had a freight line which was a branch from the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway. This branch is unlikely to be re-opened. Could be served by distant station on the Ayr-Killoch line at say Drongan. |

| Aboyne | 2230 | |
| Gullane | 2190 | Gullane was served by a terminus of a line from East Coast Main Line. Gullane was the largest town served by the Aberlady and North Berwick Railway which is unlikley to be re-opened. The station site at Gullane has been built on. |
| Moffat | 2190 | A short branch from Beattock terminated at Moffat. The line is unlikely to be re-opened - it has been crossed on the level by the M74 and partly obliterated at Moffat. Moffat would probably be better served by a "parkway" station at Beattock. |
| Kintore | 2140 | |
| Ormiston | 2130 | |
| Catrine | 2090 | The is was the terminus of the Catrine Railway branch from Mauchline. It could be served by parkway station at Mauchline. |

| Fochabers | 1590 | This was the terminus of the Fochabers Branch. It could be served by a parkway station at XXXXX |
| Balfron | 1580 | Balfron was poorly served by a station on the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway which ran from Balloch to Stirling. So poorly as it served that a new town of Balfron Staton grew up around the station. The line is unlikely to reopen as the route served an area of low population. |

Longridge is north of a former eastern terminal station of that name on the Wilsontown, Morningside and Coltness Railway. That line is extremely unlikely to be re-opened. It is also north of the presently open Breich on the Caledonian's Cleland and Midcalder Line - it's Edinburgh and Glasgow line. This is one of the most underused stations in the country. |

| Maidens | 540 | |
| Aberfoyle | 540 | This was the terminus of the Strathendrick and Aberfoyle Railway which was used by passenger trains from Glasgow (Queen Street High Level) to Aberfoyle. The line also carried rock from large quarries at Aberfoyle. The population is low along the route to Killearn where it enters the more populous Blane Valley. The Killearn to Aberfoyle route is unlikely to re-open. |
| Garmouth | 520 | |
| Rothienorman | 520 | |
| Nethy Bridge | 510 | |
| Upper Largo | 510 | |
| Buchlyvie | 510 | There was a station serving this villageon the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway. The station was distant of the village. The railway is unlikely to re-open as it served an area of low population. Much of the route remains intact. |
| Coaltown of Wemyss | 510 | |
| Fort Augustus | 500 | Fort Augustus was the terminus of the ill judged Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway. It in unlikely to be served by a railway unless a decision is taken to build a line from Inverness to Fort William through an area of low population. |
