Milngavie
Milngavie was a textile town built by the river Allander. As a result, this it is quite an old town (founded before 1790) and once boasted mills and dye works. One of the local mills, Gavins Mill, remains as an Indian restaurant. This mill is the source of the town's name. Milngavie is now an area of housing and shopping with a pedestrian precinct. Near Milngavie is the Mugdock Water Works which provide water to a large part of Glasgow and were built by the Glasgow Corporation in the 1890s. Milngavie is also the West Highland Way's starting point (unless you prefer starting from Glasgow and walking beside roads). A popular past-time for the local youngsters is modifying the signs pointing to the walk's start. Lost backpackers have turned up in Kirkintilloch (definitely not on the route) before now.
