Bearsden
Bearsden was originally called New Kilpatrick and still has a New Kilpatrick Church. Through the town runs Roman Road which was the Military way of the Roman defensive wall ("Antonine's Wall"), built on order of the Emperor Antonious Pius about 143AD. The wall connected together a chain of existing (and new) forts from the Clyde to the Forth. Remains of a bathhouse in the Bearsden Roman fort can be viewed. The Roman Road intersects the main road from Glasgow at Bearsden Cross, an area of shops and traffic tailbacks. Bearsden largely consists of sandstone town houses built by Glasgow Merchants shortly after the Glasgow and Milngavie Junction Railway was opened. To the north there are newer housing estates.
