|It's early on a chilly December morning and Georgina Jackson is wedged in the middle of a mob of bleary-eyed commuters at Reading station, who are scrambling to board the London-bound train.
Travellers dip and dive in search of that elusive prize – an empty seat. Their chances are slim, as the train is already bursting at the seams.
Welcome to Britain's worst rail journey: the rush-hour morning train from Reading to London Paddington.

|31/12/2011|| Crash car lands in front of train [PA]|
|Three people had a miraculous escape after their car crashed through a railway bridge on to the track below, in front of an on-coming steam train.
Two cars collided on the bridge that crossed over the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway (GWR) near the village of Southam, Gloucestershire, at around 1.30pm.
One of the cars fell 20 feet onto the track below the bridge on Southam Lane and landed on its roof. The train that was travelling along the line managed to stop before hitting the car. No injuries were reported.

|30/12/2011|| Network Rail sued over Caithness crossing crash [BBC]|
|Network Rail is being sued by the son of a couple killed when their car collided with a train at a level crossing in Caithness two years ago.
Angus MacKay and his wife Margaret, both 81, from Inverness, and Mr MacKay's brother Donald, 66, of Latheron, died in the incident.
The MacKays' son, Donald, said he hoped his action would highlight what he said were shortcomings in crossing safety.
Network Rail said it could not comment on the legal action at this stage.

|30/12/2011|| MPs win parliamentary debate on widening rail line between Clitheroe and Manchester [Lancashire Telegraph]|
|TWO East Lancashire MPs have secured a House of Commons debate, calling for better rail services to and from Manchester.
Blackburn MP Jack Straw, and Darwen MP Jake Berry will make the case for improvements to the Clitheroe to Manchester line - which also goes through Blackburn and Darwen - and the need for doubling the track between Blackburn and Bolton. [From Mark Bartlett]
Appearances can be deceptive. Darwen looks like a deserted station on a double track line but in fact a sizeable number of Saturday shoppers had just joined 156472 heading north towards Blackburn on 23 July. The two tracks are actually a long passing loop, the only one on the ten mile single line section between Blackburn and Bromley Cross.

Entwistle is a remote request stop halt on the Lancashire moors. It is now on the single line between Darwen and Bromley Cross but there used to be four tracks between here and the summit at Sough Tunnel. Another passenger line went to the left of what was an island platform with two goods lines where the relay room now stands. |Five Scottish railway stations are to share £9.5m to improve accessibility.
Work will be carried out at the Dyce, Shotts, Newton, Rosyth and Dunblane stations to improve facilities for disabled people and others with impaired mobility, such as people with prams.
Feasibility studies will be carried out at the stations over the coming months.

|29/12/2011|| Demand to close 'high risk' rail crossing [North Star]|
|A CAMPAIGN is under way to close an open level railway crossing road in Ross-shire amid safety fears from the local community.
People living in Craig Road in Dingwall say the route is a safety hazard with 44-tonne HGVs from Tesco trying to access the store's delivery area, just yards from one of the town's three ungated railway crossing.
The crossing - Dingwall No 1 - is on the Rail Regulator's high risk list and Network Rail has been told to make it safer, or close it. [From Richard Buckby]

|28/12/2011|| New Shettleston footbridge almost complete [Railscot]|
|Just over a year after services were extended west via Bathgate to Edinburgh work on the replacement footbridge at Shettleston Station is almost complete. There are no ramps in place at the moment, although there appear to be brackets which would allow for their addition when the old bridge is removed. [From Colin McDonald]

|A MULTI-MILLION pound plan to build 1600 houses in the north of Glasgow could be axed because of a row over a proposed rail station.
Glasgow City Council has delayed its decision on giving planning permission in principle to the Stewart Milne development in Robroyston.
Scotland’s largest local authority made the decision because of an objection, lodged by Network Rail, over plans to create a station, at nearby Millerston.
Network Rail has since dropped the objection … on the condition that the developer “proves there is a need” for a new station in the area.
It is understood Stewart Milne has still to do this and will amend their planning proposal before the city council’s Planning Applications Committee looks at it again, early next year.
As revealed by the Evening Times last year, developer Stewart Milne wants to build 1600 houses on 420 acres site in Robroyston straddling the M80.
Plans for the site include a hotel, shops, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, healthcare and community facilities, a motorway underpass, open space and the new rail station, with park-and-ride facilities.
The need for a rail station at the location had not been proven
The massive scheme will be three times the size of the Glasgow Harbour development.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “The council’s Planning Applications Committee of November 30 decided to reconsider a final decision on this project as members had concerns over an unresolved objection.
“It is hoped that the proposals will be considered again by the committee early in the New Year.”
In 2010, Stewart Milne applied for planning permission in principle, on former green belt land at Robroyston Road, and the application went before city councillors last month.
However, the Planning Applications Committee decided to “reconsider” their final decision because of Network Rail’s “unresolved objection”.
The ambitious building project is expected to cost more than £100million.
Developers have also set aside £3m to expand Wallacewell Primary, to ensure it is big enough to accommodate the extra children on the roll.
A Network Rail spokesman said: “We are always willing to examine proposals to expand the rail network, as long as they meet an indentified need and are supported by a business case and funding package.
“Network Rail initially objected to the developer’s proposal on the basis that the need for a rail station at the location had not been proven.
“Planning conditions requiring the developer to properly assess the need for a station are proposed to be added to the consent, meaning that Network Rail has been able to withdraw its objection.”

|THE number of overcrowded trains on the ScotRail network has more than quadrupled over the past five years amid record demand for rail travel.
The problem is most frequent on Glasgow-Edinburgh services during the morning and afternoon peak periods, which accounted for more than one-quarter of overcrowded trains.
However, the highest loadings were recorded on trains in the Strathclyde suburban network, which accounts for nearly two- thirds of train journeys in Scotland. On services between Dalmuir and Motherwell or Larkhall, some trains had in excess of 100 more passengers than seats available

|27/12/2011|| New platform and 60 extra carriages for Waterloo commuters [DoT]|
|Passengers on some of the country’s busiest rail routes are set to benefit from extra carriages to ease overcrowding and the former Waterloo International Station is to be reopened for commuter services, Transport Secretary Justine Greening announced today.
The 60 extra carriages are being added thanks to Government funding for South West Trains to lease the vehicles. Their arrival will mean that services from Windsor, Weybridge (via Staines), Portsmouth, Southampton, Eastleigh, Reading, Hounslow and Alton into Waterloo can be lengthened and additional services will also run from Reading. Their deployment will mean that platform 20 at the former Waterloo International Terminal will come back into use from 2014. [From Mark Bartlett]

|A bullet train crash which killed 40 people in China in July was caused by design flaws and sloppy management, the Chinese government says.
Almost 200 people were injured in the crash near the south-eastern city of Wenzhou.
'Missteps' by 54 officials led to the disaster, the long-awaited official report says.
The crash led many Chinese to accuse the government of putting development and profit before safety.

|Police have seized 14 tonnes of suspected stolen railway cable and made 45 arrests after searching around 160 scrap metal yards in a single day.
The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) said the haul followed visits to 400 scrap metal recyclers in England and Wales on 14 December.
The day of action aimed to tackle the 'growing' crime of metal theft, thought to cost the economy £700m a year.
Scotland Yard is launching a dedicated unit to target the thieves.

|Over 600 people – from engineers, electricians and builders to carpenters, stone masons and abseilers – who are working to transform King’s Cross station got into the festive spirit today to celebrate the end of major construction work on the new western concourse.
The new concourse is the stand-out feature of the £500m redevelopment of King’s Cross to make it into a world-class transport hub. The striking domed roof covers an area three-times the size of the existing concourse and big enough to fit over six Olympic-sized swimming pools. As well as providing a brighter, more spacious station, it will contain a wide range of new food and drink outlets and shops, plus improved facilities which will improve the journey experience for passengers.

|THEY are some of the most striking images ever produced of Scotland and they helped kick-start the early tourism industry, fuelling the boom in cross-Border travel.
Seaside destinations, celebrated passenger trains and iconic structures were brought to life by a group by artists during a golden era of advertising.
Now a collection of rare posters covering the heyday of railway art is to be given pride of place at one of the nation’s main museums to celebrate more than 100 years of rail travel in Scotland. Some 30 posters hidden away in the archives of the National Museum of Scotland are to go on display for the first time, along with several on loan from the National Railway Museum in York.

|A pioneering ScotRail initiative to develop young talent has scooped the
Best Business Newcomer title at the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Awards
The prestigious award follows ScotRail last year launching the UK rail
industry’s first Modern Apprenticeship in Customer Service.
The £250,000 initiative is designed to both boost business and provide
opportunities for young people to enter the challenging jobs market.
During 18-month apprenticeships, the 11 Modern Apprentices are each
trained, paid and given six-month placements in hands-on roles in
ScotRail’s station, on-trains and hospitality departments.
The apprentices, aged between 18 and 22, can gain recognition of their
efforts by working towards a Scottish Vocational Qualification in Customer
Service and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
The scheme’s success has led to enquiries from other UK train operating
companies interested in launching similar programmes.

|The future of direct daytime train services between Inverness and London is still up for debate, according to Scottish transport minister Keith Brown in an exclusive interview with The Inverness Courier.
Cross-border Caledonian Sleeper train services were secured earlier this week when the Scottish government announced it would more than match the £50 million of investment from the UK government for the service.
But a question mark remains over the daytime Highland Chieftain service in a consultation document published by Transport Scotland about the future of Scotland’s rail services after 2014.
It suggests is passengers using cross-border services might be forced to change trains in Edinburgh — an option which has provoked huge opposition.

|SCOTRAIL passengers on the Glasgow to Edinburgh service can now spend a penny in style – after the onboard loos were given a “luxury” makeover.
As our pictures show, the toilets have been decorated with little ceramic vases on a wooden shelf, some wall art and even a potted orchid.
The present day fuelling facilities at Perth are located around the former platforms 8 and 9. This is a view of the ^half shed^ and fuelling pumps installed a couple of years ago to handle the servicing of the Class 170s, including their associated CETs (Controlled Emission Tanks). Class 158^s have all now been similarly adapted so the toilets can now be safely flushed in stations! The two stainless steel machines beyond the green wheeled bowser are two of the three CET pumps. Needless to say the latter are referred to in more colloquial terms locally.

|23/12/2011|| Strike cancels 100 trains as shoppers struggle to get home for Christmas [Scotsman]|
|NETWORK Rail has insisted Boxing Day passengers will not be disrupted by a signallers’ strike, despite having to cancel around 100 trains today.
The firm admitted it had been overconfident in announcing last week that ScotRail would be able to run normal services on Christmas Eve, at the start of a three-day walkout at the main signalling centre in Glasgow.
It explained that some of the managers and non-union staff who had been expected to cover for the strikers were found to be not available. That forced Network Rail to announce on Wednesday that the frequency of ScotRail trains on five routes would be cut by up to half today.
The move will leave shoppers and other festive travellers with one train an hour on lines between Glasgow Central and Barrhead, Paisley Canal and Whifflet, and on the Cathcart Circle in Glasgow via Maxwell Park. Glasgow-Gourock trains will be cut from three to two per hour.

|Fire crews have been tackling a severe blaze at a business park in Lancashire.
The fire, which has destroyed five buildings, started at about 17:00 GMT at the Lancashire Enterprise Business Park in Leyland.
Up to 150 firefighters were sent to the scene, with several main roads closed in the area and rail travel disrupted. The West Coast Main Line was closed due to the proximity of a gas main and a number of exploding beer barrels. [From John McIntyre & Mark Bartlett]

|The Scottish government has committed £50m in funding to secure cross-border sleeper train services.
This matches £50m in UK government investment detailed in Chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement.
Mr Osborne made the funds available on the condition Holyrood ministers agreed to co-fund an improvement programme.
The money will be used to replace the cross-border Caledonian Sleeper fleet, which is coming to the end of its life, and improve on-train facilities.

Early morning at Tulloch during Christmas 1987. The northbound sleeper, hauled by 37423, has drawn forward of the crossing between platforms due to its length. At the southbound platform is the morning train for Glasgow (37407 Loch Long). The train crews swap over across the tracks (they also guided a dismounting passenger). Slippery diesel was spilled all over the footway so crunching across the ballast might have been a better option anyway. Tulloch was very much in use as a maintenance base at the time, with lots of equipment lying alongside the platers hut on the left.

|Rail passengers in Scotland will face fare increases of 6% from January.
Train operator ScotRail made the announcement as rail companies across the UK revealed average price rises of 5.9%.

|Network Rail’s poor performance triggered a fresh row over the executive bonus scheme with Justine Greening, the Transport Secretary, saying that payouts next year would be unjustified.
She intervened after the regulator found that the infrastructure company was in breach of its licence conditions.
Long distance train services are classed as running on time if they are less than 10 minutes late when they arrive at their destination.
But according to the ORR the latest statistics showed that only 87.1 per cent of trains were meeting the target, well short of the 90.9 per cent target. At the same time freight delays are also 32 per cent higher than they should have been.
“Network Rail has achieved a lot in recent years, but while it signed up to improve performance year-on-year, its performance is now worsening,” said Richard Price, the ORR’S chief executive. [From Mark Bartlett]

|The driver of a hay lorry hit by a train on a level crossing in Carmarthenshire has been arrested.
Seven people on the Milford Haven to Manchester service suffered minor injuries near Whitland at 09:50 GMT.
Passengers were led to safety and shuttle buses are now running between Milford Haven and Carmarthen. Engineers are assessing the damage.
British Transport Police (BTP) said a 48-year-old local man was being held on suspicion of endangering safety.

|17/12/2011|| Inquiry beckons as Watson and power giant object to rail land acquisition bid [Southern Reporter]|
|A PIECE of farmland considered essential to the agreed route of the Borders railway in the north of the region has yet to be acquired, The Southern can reveal. This week it emerged there have been two objections to a bid by Scottish Borders Council to slap a compulsory purchase order (CPO) on the land, owned by the Kibble family, at Falahill Farm near Heriot.
This is likely to mean a public inquiry .

|Thirty years after the world's first tilting train carried passengers, engineers behind the project have said the idea that it was a failure still angers them. Developed and built in Derby in the 1970s, the Advanced Passenger Train (APT) started life as an experimental, high speed train capable of travelling up to 155 mph.
It was withdrawn from service only four days after its first public run because of problems with the tilt mechanism, and other factors.

|THE campaign for a Dornoch rail crossing has received “a massive boost” following a survey which was conducted by a local pressure group.
The Dornoch Rail Link Action Group surveyed more than 500 rail users over the past three months and is delighted with the findings.
They show overwhelming support for the crossing which would reduce journey times on the Far North line by 45 minutes. The trip between Wick and Inverness currently takes four hours and 26 minutes.
A southbound 158 with the afternoon service from the far north turns inland after skirting the shore of Loch Fleet on 29 August 2007. The train is about to pass through the former junction for Dornoch at The Mound (closed 1960) before taking the route via Lairg and the Oykel Viaduct [see image 16500].

A train from the far north passing the long closed station at Meikle Ferry on 25 August 2007. The station was open for less than 5 years, closing on 1 January 1869, having been originally planned when consideration was being given to taking a direct route north from here across the Dornoch Firth.
