Photographs of Waverley

Waverley: A3 Pacific no 60093 Coronach about to enter the Calton Tunnel on 12 August 1961 with the 10.05 up Waverley bound for London St Pancras. The first scheduled stop will be Galashiels in 53 minutes time. Nowadays, the 10.05 X95 bus from nearby Waterloo Place, will reach Gala in 1 hour 15 minutes – how's that for half a century of progress! When the line is re-opened to Tweedbank (5 minutes beyond Galashiels) in 2014, there will be a maximum 55 minute journey time to the terminus, including eight intermediate stops.

Waverley: Motorail vans at Waverley in April 1995.  The cut-down 'platforms' used only by Motorail services had no numbers but were formerly platforms 8 and 9 in the days when as many platforms were needed at the east end of the station as at the west.  When platforms were renumbered in December 2006 the old 7 became 4 and 10 became 7, so provision has been made for these platforms to reopen as 5 and 6.  At present there isn't really the need for them and they are normally used to stable sleeper locomotives [see image 13877].

Waverley: The Solari (named after its Italian manufacturer) was installed at Waverley in 1970 in the spruce-up for the Commonwealth Games.  It is now July 1997 and its less entertaining successor is taking shape.  The 1040 to Brighton, the Sussex Scot, is on the board and the limitations of the technology are obvious.  Every time a timetable change resulted in a stopping pattern not covered by existing leaves, or there was a new station stop added, it meant a man on portable scaffolding was required to add new leaves or stick-on letters.

Waverley: The western concourse at Waverley seen in November 1998 during the construction of the W H Smith's block which took up so much of the space, though with a curving front to ease passenger flow.  The shop's predecessor can just be seen on the right.  Notice also the short-lived bi-coloured LED departure board, which gave way a few years later to the all-yellow style used throughout the network.
