Bolton-le-Sands: All trace of Bolton-le-Sands station was swept away between closure in 1969 and electrification in 1974. Here a Pendolino passes the site of the old platforms and approaches the level crossing at speed from Carnforth on a southbound service. View north from the level crossing. Map Ref SD480683

Burton and Holme: Nearly sixty years after closure in 1950 Burton and Holme still stands alongside the West Coast mainline, now a private residence. Situated around one mile west of Burton village and one mile south of Holme, the station was more or less in the middle of nowhere, hence its early closure. Map reference SD 522774

The gauge was installed when this exposed stretch of line was electrified. If wind speeds rise above a certain figure the trains run slowly at caution to protect the overhead catenary. Behind the box the foreshore can be seen, the sands of Morecambe Bay at low tide and, in the distance, the Cumbrian coast near Kents Bank.

Hincaster Junction: The east end of Hincaster tunnel under the WCML (which can just be made out above the tunnel entrance). Although this looks like a single track railway tunnel, it is in fact part of the abandoned Lancaster Canal which formerly operated between Preston and Kendal. The tunnel was constructed during 1816 & 1817 and is 378 yards long. Over 4 million bricks were used in the construction of the tunnel and in its day was the first major brick structure north of the River Mersey. The path to the left also leads under the WCML, over the hill and to the west side of the tunnel. It was used by the horses that pulled the barges on the canal as there was no towpath through the tunnel. The last commercial traffic passed through the tunnel in 1944. See also photos 21298 and 21302. This is a key point on yesterdays and todays transport networks as the A590 dual carriageway also passes under the WCML approx 50 yards to the right of the picture.

Ingleton (LandC/LNWR): To the north side of Ingleton gorge was the Lancaster and Carlisle, later LNWR, station. Once the dispute between the Midland and LNWR over through running was resolved this station became redundant although it did not finally close until 1916. The station site is now a depot, situated just beyond the trees in this view south from an old overbridge.
