Carnforth: Coaling towers were once a distinctive skyline feature in many places but are very rare now. The tower at Carnforth is a concrete post-war structure and survives in the West Coast Railway depot although it is no longer operational. It is seen here from Carnforth station car park with the depot water tower alongside. The old main line platforms and the subway entrance can be seen to the left of the station building, which now houses a travel centre booking office and small businesses.

Carnforth: A Virgin Voyager passes Carnforth on 19 June 2010 on a service to Birmingham New Street. The WCML platforms at Carnforth were removed prior to electrification, resulting in passengers wanting to travel north having to first go south to Lancaster. Since the introduction of the Virgin VHF timetable the options for connections at Lancaster have been reduced and therefore a lengthy detour via Preston is sometimes necessary. The original station building on the WCML up platform here remains in use today as the booking office and a number of small retail outlets. The buildings on the platform between the WCML and Furness lines have been restored and now house a refreshment room and visitor centre, both well worth a visit.

Carnforth: Looking at the locomotives stabled next to the station at Carnforth on 19 June 2010 you may think that DRS had opened a new depot, but the yard area around the former steam shed (latterly 10A in BR days) is still part of the West Coast Railway Company. Three Class 37 and four Class 20 locos are currently stored on the site in the shadow of the coal and ash towers.

Carnforth: 'Which Scot is that?' might have been the cry of a frustrated sixties spotter looking across from Carnforth station platform to the shed. No 46115 Scots Guardsman, with a remarkable load of coal in its tender, receives attention outside the running shed at Carnforth on 27 August 2010. West Coast locomotives are kept busy at this time of year and I believe 46115 had worked the Scarborough Flyer the previous day.

Hest Bank: So that's why they call it the West Coast Main Line. 66510 and a long train of coal empties skirt Morecambe Bay while heading north at Hest Bank. The line trailing in behind the locomotive is the link from Bare Lane, now used by nuclear trains from Heysham Power Station and (from 2009) two passenger services each weekday.

Hest Bank: The view of Morecambe Bay from the train opens out as a Manchester Airport TPE service, formed by 185124, approaches the level crossing at Hest Bank. Hest Bank: The wind gauge on Hest Bank signal box was spinning furiously on a very blustery day as 144012 passed on a Morecambe to Leeds service. The gauge was installed when this exposed stretch of line was electrified. If wind speeds rise above a certain figure the trains run slowly at caution to protect the overhead catenary. Behind the box the foreshore can be seen, the sands of Morecambe Bay at low tide and, in the distance, the Cumbrian coast near Kents Bank.

Hest Bank: Only two passenger trains a day traverse the Bare Lane to Hest Bank chord - the 0551 and the 1620 from Morecambe. No contest then for which one to photograph! 142050 rejoins the mainline at Hest Bank on its way to Leeds via Skipton. Hest Bank: The former station building at Hest Bank, closed in 1969, still sits on the Up line next to the level crossing and is used as business offices although the platforms were removed for electrification. Hincaster Junction: Horse Creep? As boats were legged through the Hincaster canal tunnel the horses had to cross the railway and go over the hill on a path that is still open. Hincaster Junction: The east end of Hincaster tunnel under the WCML (which can just be made out above the tunnel entrance). Although this looks like a single track railway tunnel, it is in fact part of the abandoned Lancaster Canal which formerly operated between Preston and Kendal. The tunnel was constructed during 1816 & 1817 and is 378 yards long. Over 4 million bricks were used in the construction of the tunnel and in its day was the first major brick structure north of the River Mersey. The path to the left also leads under the WCML, over the hill and to the west side of the tunnel. It was used by the horses that pulled the barges on the canal as there was no towpath through the tunnel. The last commercial traffic passed through the tunnel in 1944. See also photos 21298 and 21302. This is a key point on yesterdays and todays transport networks as the A590 dual carriageway also passes under the WCML approx 50 yards to the right of the picture.
