Reading Depot: A long way from home at Reading Depot. The former D2420, 06003, is now the sole surviving Barclay Class 06 0-4-0 DM shunter and is currently at Barrow Hill. It may have escaped the scrap man by being transferred from Scotland to Departmental duties at Reading Signal Works.
Here it is shown, newly renumbered as 97804, at Reading Depot just prior to transfer to the works to replace 97020. The Barclay stayed there until 1984 when it moved into preservation.

Reading Signal Works: Originally known simply as 20, Ruston & Hornsby 4wDM 97020 was built in 1957 for use in Reading Signal Works and remained there all its working life. It was tricky to see as the yard was not visible from passing trains. By the time this photo was taken, through the bars of an overbridge, the shunter was on borrowed time as its replacement, Barclay Class 06 No. 06003, had arrived in Reading from Scotland. 97020 never did leave this yard, being broken up there by a contractor in August 1982. The Signal Works closed later in the 1980s.

Saltash: Brunel's famous Saltash suspension bridge over the Tamar estuary, as seen from an approaching Penzance to Exeter train, which is just about to call at Saltash station and then swing sharply right onto the bridge approach. Under the left hand span the Ernsettle Royal Navy depot, rail served from the Gunnislake branch that runs along the far shore, can be seen.

Severn Beach: Severn Beach looking to Avonmouth. You could be forgiven for thinking this station is closed given all this dereliction. To be fair there is a track still down the other side of the platform. Today it's a terminus as the line on to Pilning closed in 1968. The lifted lines to the left served the Severnside works (lines out of use by 2000).

Swindon: Locomotives 31234 and 47079 (formerly D1664) G J Churchward stand at the Swindon stabling point in March 1983. The class 47 had carried the name George Jackson Churchward until approximately 4 years previously (see image 3236) but, for some reason (anyone know why?) by 1980 the full name of the former CME of the Great Western Railway had been reduced to initials by BR. No 47079 was subsequently rebuilt as 57029 and became part of the DRS fleet from December 2007.

Swindon Works: North British Class 22 D6330, with nose doors open, stands at the head of a line of sister NBL locos at Swindon. A handful of the class had just made it into 1972 but all the survivors had been withdrawn by the time this picture was taken and D6330 was cut up three months later in June 1972. [See image 19448] for a picture of D6319, the last survivor just before it was also cut up.

Swindon Works: Two Hymek Class 35s and a North British Class 22 await the inevitable in Swindon Works yard in 1972. The NBL Class 22 is in early rail blue with a half yellow panel and engineless although the flat wagon next to it appears to be carrying a power unit under the tarpaulin. The green Hymek has already lost its engine and the roofless early blue specimen behind is in an equally sorry state. My records from the time indicate that the Class 22 was D6322 and the green Hymek D7049.

Swindon Works: D1019 Western Challenger, one of the first four Westerns to be withdrawn, looking very woebegone in Swindon Works yard awaiting scrapping. Even in this condition the fine looks of the Class 52 are evident, which leads me to wonder (and its just a personal opinion) how, after 47 years of 'progress', we have produced the Class 70?

Swindon Works: Western D1019 and Hymek D7089 on the scrap line at Swindon Works on 16 March 1974. Both had been withdrawn the previous May but the Hymek (which is clearly in better condition here) was later removed from the works yard for departmental service as train heating unit ADB968005. This was only for a brief period but the loco didn't return to Swindon, being broken up at Thomson's in Stockton in late 1975 or early 1976. D1019 only lasted a few more months and was cut up at Swindon in October 1974. (With thanks to Peter Todd and Crinan Dunbar).

One of the 512 Brush Type 4 diesel electrics built for BR in the 1960s, it began life as D1628. Having been subsequently renumbered as 47046 it was refitted as a mobile test rig for class 56 traction equipment in 1976 and given the number 47601. A further conversion took place 3 years later in 1979, when it was refitted with class 58 test components and given the number 47901. It was finally withdrawn from service in February 1990.
