Description of route

Top

This canal follows the Great Glen and runs from Banavie (near Fort William) to Clachnaharry (near Inverness).

The canal was engineered by Thomas Telford. Initially the canal was not a success as it did not have a great enough depth. The canal consists of 4 sections of canal which link the lochs Loch Linnhe, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness to the Moray Firth.
