This line runs through an area of hillfarming. There was a military camp at Woodburn. There was also a gun range.
This was a single track line from Reedsmouth to Morpeth. The line was built with two things in mind; to serve the area the line ran though and to connect the North British Railway's system to that of the Blyth and Tyne Railway at Morpeth. The latter plan would allow the North British Railway access to Newcastle by a route not controlled by the North Eastern Railway. The North British Railway entered into discussion with the Blyth and Tyne Railway to buy it but were pipped to the post by the North Eastern Railway who rapidly made arrangements to buy the Blyth and Tyne Railway.
In Redesmouth the Wansbeck Railway joined the
Border Counties
Railway at a south facing junction at Reedsmouth station. (The spelling
of the town and station are different.)
From a south facing juncton a line ran to Broomhope
where there was a gun range in the Second World War.
This was a single platform station with a few sidings. Troop trains used the trains for a nearby military camp. The station was actually in West Woodburn. The station is now a house.

From this station ran the Northumberland Central Railway northwards to Rothbury. The station is now an estate's offices.

Originally the line passed over the top of the Newcastle and Berwick Railway to meet the Morpeth Branch of the Blyth and Tyne Railway at its station in Morpeth. This was later altered so that the line met the Newcastle and Berwick Railway at an east facing junction to the west of the present Morpeth station and the flyover was removed..
