Strathpeffer station |
This short branch runs through farmland to approach Strathpeffer from the east. To the north of the line is high ground. The Dingwall and Skye Railway should have run through Strathpeffer but was forced to run further north over Raven's Rock by the people of Strathpeffer. An inconvenient station was opened, re-named Auchterneed when the Strathpeffer Branch opened. Both the branch and the inconvenient station have closed. Not passing through Strathpeffer has led to a major cut to the revenue and future security of the Dingwall and Skye Railway over the years.
An express train, the Strathpeffer Express, once served Strathpeffer which was a spa town in Victorian days with a large number of hotels, one of which was owned by the Highland Railway.
From Fodderty Junction to Strathpeffer.
This was an east facing junction with the former Dingwall and Skye Railway which is still open. The formation of the junction still exists, with the Strathpeffer line running west from the junction and the line to Kyle turning north west to run to Loch Garve and west to Kyle.
This station was closed to freight in 1946 and passengers in 1951. The building still stands in use as a series of small shops. The station had a single platform and goods yard to the east.
