This line runs through heath, moor and an area now forrested. To the north of Glenbuck the line served a number of coalmines.
The line was not opened throughout as the Glasgow and South Western Railway was going to apply for running powers east along the line to Lanark if it were opened.
From Bankend, near Coalburn to Muirkirk Station. The line was never opened throughout although completed.
This was a halt and passing loop. There was an end on junction with Coalburn Branch at the Bankend passing loop. There was a tramway running south from here to a colliery and a branch ran west from an east facing junction to a quarry. The whole area is now an opencast mine.
This was above Glenbuck. There was a large viaduct. To the east were a few mines served by the line. The line was only opened to traffic between Bankend and these coalmines.
To reach Muirkirk the line crossed a large viaduct at Auldhouseburn. This has been demolished. The remains of the signalbox which would have controlled the west facing junction between the Caledonian Railway's Muirkirk branch and the Spireslack branch remain.
