This area used to have the Govan Colliery and Dixon's Blazes, a large ironworks. Dixon started by taking the mineral working rights for the coal and went on to build the ironworks as well as later building others, Clyde Iron and purchasing others in Coatbridge.
Today all the works are closed and the area has some housing and much vacant land.
The line served the works and mines and was extended to the River Clyde at Windmillcroft Quay.
This line ran from Tradeston to Rutherglen. The line was extended from Tradeston to Windmillcroft quay and finally extended by the Clydesdale Junction Railway on to Motherwell.
