This line is to the east of Edinburgh close to the Firth of Forth.
This line ran from near Fisherrow to Musselburgh.
When first opened a train from Edinburgh to Musselburgh would run;
East from North Bridge (later Waverley) to Portobello East Junction along the North British Railway.
South from Portobello East Junction to Niddrie [2nd station] on the North British's Portobello-Niddrie link line to the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway.
East round a short NBR built curve onto the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway's Niddrie-Fisherrow branch.
East along the Fisherrow Branch, passing under the North British's mainline.
East off the Fisherrow Branch, just short of the Fisherrow terminus, and on to the terminus at Musselburgh.
On opening of the Newhailes Curve (this land was occupied by a colliery when the North British mainline was built, thus a curve could not be built here at that time) the Niddrie [2nd] station closed as did the short curve there. Niddrie [3rd] opened further south at Niddrie South Jnct.
Some OS maps show the E&DR's Niddrie to Fisherrow's branch severed by the NBR's Portobello to Niddrie link line, while some others show a railway level crossing. Certainly it was closed and lifted. The later Niddrie West Jnct to Wanton Wells alignment was built by the NBR slightly to the north of the original E&DR alignment.
