The line runs through an area of what is today housing and farmed countryside.
The line runs from Morpeth to Newsham. After building the Wansbeck Railway the North British Railway was keen to acquire the Blyth and Tyne Railway to gain access to Newcastle by a route independent of the North Eastern Railway. The North Eastern Railway bought the Blyth and Tyne Railway quickly to stop this happening.
