Most of this line is still open. This railway ran from Derby to Rugby with a branch to Nottingham. It ran in competition with the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and was continued north to Leeds by the North Midland Railway and even further north by the York and North Midland Railway. It was one of the founders of the Midland Railway. |

This company merged with the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and the North Midland Railway to form the Midland Railway. George Hudson was instrumental in this merger which saved the ruinous cut-price competition this line was having with the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway for receipts to destinations on the London and Birmingham Railway and other west coast companies.
