This line runs through farmed countryside from Cleghorn to Lanark.
From Cleghorn to Lanark.
Lanark Junction
This is the west facing junction with the West Coast Main Line ( formerly the Caledonian Railway). The junction is used by trains from Glasgow running to Lanark. The branch was double track but is now single.
This was an east facing junction where the branch met the West Coast Main Line (formerly the Caledonian Railway). The signalbox here, in the 'v' of the junction, was located a few metres south of the mainline. The junction was used by services frm Edinburgh to Lanark which now cannot run. The formation of the junction is partly occupied by a house. The branch was double track.
At this north facing junction the Douglas Branch (Caledonian Railway) joined the branch and the lines from Lanark Junction and Lanark East Junction merged. This allowed through running for freight trains off the branch and avoided reversal at Lanark. The triangular Smyllum Junctions were used to turn engines after arriving at the Lanark terminus. The lines to Lanark were double track and the line on to Douglas single.
This west facing junction allowed passenger trains coming off the Douglas Branch (Caledonian Railway) to run into Lanark station.
This is the terminus of the line. A goods yard existed slightly further east. Today the terminus has two platforms and retains its station buildings. The single track (formerly double) of the line doubles as it enteres the station. There is no run-around loop. A run-round loop sat between the two single branch tracks - now lifted.
