This line ran east-west through the Ayrshire coalfield. The area has one or two small towns and formerly a number of mines.
This was a double track railway from Irvine to Crosshouse, near Kilmarnock.
The line's western end was a north facing junction with the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway just south of Irvine station. Just to the east the line crossed over a river and the bridge is now a roadbridge.

At Crosshouse the line met the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway at a southeast facing junction for Kilmarnock. The junction was originally called Busby Junction. A four platform station was built in the 'V' of the junction.
