Glasgow and Kilmarnock Joint Railway This line is open. This was a joint line owned by the Caledonian Railway and Glasgow and South Western Railway. The line was joint as the Caledonian wanted to extend its Glasgow Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway to Kilmarnock and the South Western wanted to build a more direct line from Kilmarnock to Glasgow. The Glasgow Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway was taken into joint ownership and along with the Glasgow and Kilmarnrock Joint Railway it became the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway, GB & K Jnt or GBK. The line included a branch to Beith from Lugton, now cut back to RNAD Beith (at Giffen). This branch is now in abeyance. The line has been singled between Barrhead and Kilmarnock except for a passing loop at the closed Lugton station. Railtrack have considered a 'dynamic loop' somewhere on the line to increase capacity. |

This line runs through farmland to the south of Glasgow, the small towns of Dunlop, Stewarton and Kilmaurs to Kilmarnock.
This line was built jointly by the Caledonian Railway and the Glasgow and South Western Railway. The two companies intending building parallel routes between Glasgow and Kilmarnock via Barrhead.
Formerly a double track railway from Glasgow to Kilmarnock. The line has been singled. There is a semaphore signaled loop at lugton.
This was the southern terminus of the Glasgow
Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway. When the line was extended south to
Kilmarnock the station here had two platforms. The station was also known as
Crofthead and Neilston Joint. The station buildings have been demolished.
This was a two platform station. The station building remains in use as a house but the platforms are gone.
This was a south facing junction to the north of Lugton station which gave access to the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway. This would have allowed Caledonian Railway trains to run between Glasgow and Kilmarnock on their own metals until Lugton where they could change over to joint owned track to Kilmarnock. This connection was also used before the Lugton East section of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway was opened.
This was a large station with two platforms. The signalbox remains open here and there is a passing loop, on what is now a single track line from Barrhead to Kilmarnock, signaled with semaphore. Formerly there was a large goods yard and refuge sidings here to the north of the station, the line being double track. There is a siding here used by William Clegg.
This is a north facing junction. To the north lines run to Barrhead and Glasgow, to the south lines run westwards to Giffen and formerly Beith and Ardrossan, and south to Kilmarnock. Then Giffen line is in place but closed.
This was a junction with the Caledonian Railway's Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway. The junction faced north and gave access to the line from here to Ardrossan before the Giffen to Lugton, Neilston, Cathcart and Newton section was opened.
This station has been demolished. On my last visit the site was ploughed through with a short section of platform remaining, perhaps in preparation for a housing estate. The station had a single platform.
This was the terminus of a branch from Lugton. The station had a single platform with passing loop and goods yard. To the south of the site was an engine shed, located to the west side of the line. The site is now a housing estate.
This was a two platform station. The goods
yard remains standing.
This was a two platform station. Both platforms remain in a fair state of repair.
This was a two platform station. It was re-opened in the 1980s as a single platform station. To the south of the station there was a rail-served dairy.
This junction is just to the north of Kilmarnock station. Here the line from Barrhead joined the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway and the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway at a south facing junction.
