This line crossed farmland to the west of Paisley. At the eastern end of the line there were a few coalmines. The only town of any size surved was Bridge of Weir, the terminus.
The line ran north-west from Elderslie near
Paisley to Bridge of Weir.
Elderslie West Junction
At this east facing junction the Bridge of Weir Railway met the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway to the west of Elderslie station. There was anther connection which passed under the mainline and allowed trains from Glasgow to Greenock to not foul trains from the south-west running to Glasgow. This connection used the former route of the Paisley Canal.
At this junction the original Bridge of Weir Railway (which was later extended to Greenock by the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway) was met by the Kilbarchan Loop which ran south to Dalry and effectively quadruple tracked the line from Paisley to Dalry which was the junction between the Kilmarnock and Ayr routes. Before the Kilbarchan Loop was opened a short branch had been opened from Cart Junction to Johnstone North which was a terminus nearby the later North Johnstone station. There was also a goods line between Cart Junction and North Johnstone which was the remnant of this line after the Kilbarchan Loop opened. A chord also connected Cart Junction to Johnstone station which was almost certainly opened in conjunction with the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway to allow freight from Ayrshire to run to Greenock. There was one final connection from Cart Junction to Elderslie West Junction which passed under the Elderslie-Johnstone alignment on the former route of the Paisley Canal.
This was a two platform station but by the time of the closure of the line the railway had been single tracked and only the eastbound platform was still in use. This station went through a number of name changes in its time.
This was a two platform station but by the time of the closure of the line the railway had been single tracked and only the eastbound platform was still in use. An end-on junction with the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway continued the line west to Kilmacolm and Greenock. The station building on the eastbound platform and goods shed survived the closure of the line. I gather that the station building has subsequently burned down.
